Cham and Kristi Watkins lived for many years in a spacious home in Piedmont in Pine Mountain. Then, like many couples whose children have gone off to live their own lives, the Watkins decided they no longer needed a large home. After all, who hasn’t at least once considered moving into a loft space, especially in Downtown’s Eagle and Phenix Mills Condos. The Watkins made the right move and now they are enjoying the dawn of a new era in downtown Columbus.

A major shift is happening in our general consciousness about where and how we choose to live and accessibility seems to play a major role. The once idyllic notion of suburbia as a quiet green space with cheap square footage has been replaced by cookie cutter developments, grueling commutes, and box stores. In an arm wrestle between suburbia and urban living, it seems access to a city’s culture, sustainability, and lifestyle is the strong arm.
A couple of years ago, Cham and Kristi Watkins decided to downsize, trading in their large home in Piedmont in Pine Mountain, to a loft at Eagle and Phenix Mills. Taking the furniture from their former home, it brought contrast to the open and modern, industrial style of the condo.
Beautifully restored off the banks of the Chattahoochee River, Eagle and Phenix Mills Lofts are now home to some of Columbus’ sophisticated and charming residences.
Nestled by the stairs, the kitchen features stainless steel appliances and granite top counters. With the open floor plan, it makes the kitchen easily become a social centerpiece. The kitchen is adjacent to the living room, and when the Watkins bought the condo it was a complete open-floor plan.
They decided to add a wall with built-ins, along with space for their TV, to divide up the room. This allowed them to add a large walk-in closet. The openness of space gives way to exposed brick walls, and expansive windows that provide lovely views.
The master bedroom exudes a sophisticated style and simplistic color scheme, combining new and old. The modern style of the exposed beams to the antiques the Watkins display, makes this a cozy retreat to turn to. svm
