In the heart of Columbus, Georgia, a cultural renaissance went underway as The Columbus Museum prepared for its spectacular Grand Reopening Celebration. The institution's reimagining breathed new life into its collections of American art and regional history, complemented by the relocation, expansion, and enhancement of its popular children's gallery, the addition of an interactive children's garden, and a café among other notable features.

When noted Columbus industrialist W.C. Bradley died in 1947, he bequeathed his 13-acre estate to the city of Columbus to be used as a center of culture and education. Located in the hometown of Ma Rainey, Carson McCullers, Bo Bartlett, Alma Thomas, Thomas Wiggins, Amy Sherald, and other notable artists, The Columbus Museum, which opened its doors to the public in 1953 in partnership with the Muscogee County School District, offers free admission to all visitors.

A Transformational Experience

Following an extensive renovation, The Columbus Museum emerges with a revitalized space, seamlessly blending art, history, and natural beauty. Museum Director Marianne Richter shares her excitement for the enhanced visitor experience, which boasts “open sight lines, increased natural light, and improved accessibility throughout the premises.” From the redesigned galleries to the historic Bradley Olmsted Garden, every corner of the Museum exudes a renewed sense of wonder and discovery.

THE GRAND REOPENING GALA: A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

One highlight of the celebration was undoubtedly the Grand Reopening Gala, held on Friday, April 26. This exclusive evening of elegance and lively entertainment, offered guests a first look at the transformed Museum. Attendees were treated to a splendid affair featuring culinary delights from Dennis Dean Catering, renowned for its creative cuisine and impeccable presentation.

The allure of the gala didn’t end with gourmet delights. Exceptional musical performances set the stage ablaze. Renowned cellist-songwriter Okorie "OkCello" Johnson enchanted guests with his unique blend of classical, jazz, and funk, while the electrifying 1 More Song Band kept the dance floor alive with their high-energy repertoire spanning pop, hip-hop, Motown, and more.

A Weekend of Celebration for All

Following the gala, the Museum opened its doors to the public for a weekend-long celebration on May 4th and 5th. From docent-led tours to collaborative art sessions, scavenger hunts, and captivating performances by local artists, there's something for everyone to enjoy. The festivities culminate in a Saturday night Silent Disco, offering a unique blend of music and merriment.

Exhibitions That Inspire

As part of the reopening celebration, The Columbus Museum presents a diverse array of exhibitions that showcase the richness of American art and history. From Our Own Work, Our Own Way: Ascendant Women Artists in the Johnson Collection, highlighting pioneering women artists of the 20th century, to Crossroads, an exploration of Chattahoochee Valley blues and folk music, each exhibition offers a glimpse into the cultural tapestry of the region. Not to be missed is the interactive installation Andy Warhol: Silver Clouds & Cow Wallpaper, a mesmerizing and interactive experience from the mind of this iconic artist.
