Home owners expect more from their homes’ performance and they are realizing that there is so much more to comfort than just the facade of the home. Stan Bailey Designer Inc. has been designing custom homes and has helped bring the dreams of countless homeowners to life for over 35 years. Stan spoke to SVM about how he decided to pursue a career in architecture, the type of projects that his company specializes in, and what he recommends to customers who want to work with an architect to build or renovate their home.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in architecture? What inspired you? My interest in architecture goes all the way back to probably second grade when I would build houses with blocks. Later, around 7th-8th grade I was drawing houses and building models from my plans. Always loved walking through construction sites. The idea of designing something that someone would want to live or work in is really exciting to me.

What is your signature on your projects? What are you paying attention to so your projects are unique? Large areas of glass giving lots of light is important in my design. The front entrance is a focal point and inviting. My projects themselves are often unique because of what my clients want. I've designed everything from French Chateau castle style to Southwest adobe.

How could you define your architectural approach? First of all I listen to what my clients want. It's important to them as well as to me that their finished home is what they want.

What type of projects does Stan Bailey Designer specialize in? What type of services do you offer to your clients? I specialize mainly in residential design, lakefront and mountainside homes with views.

I enjoy doing homes that need two front elevations such as streetside and lakeside. I can give a client a wide range of different plans such us a "contractors set" to a more detailed set including many details.

What would you recommend to customers who want to work with an architect to build or renovate their home? Find someone who wants to listen to them and incorporate their ideas into the plans.

Finish this sentence: The best thing about Columbus is: The many historic areas. The architecture all over town has been meticulously preserved as to the period of the build. I also believe that the riverfront revitalization that is going on right now is very exciting. SVM
