BRITTANY LILLA
Brittany Lilla studied Art History & Interior Design at Columbus State University, and she now helps families navigate those big life changes by creating the physical space that expresses who they are in an aesthetically beautiful way.
Brittany's projects typically begin with establishing a clear understanding of what the client is looking for: their priorities, style, and vision. She wants to pull out any expectations the client may not realize they have. Her priority is to communicate well enough so her clients aren’t surprised by how the project progresses, or the end result. Brittany spoke to SVM about what are some of the things to consider when you’re planning the layout of a house, what areas of a house one should invest in, and trends people should avoid.
You studied Art History & Interior Design at Columbus State University. How did you become interested in interior design? Growing up I have always had an eye for layout. While attending Columbus State University, the Art Department introduced me to the concept of how history plays a significant role in the art design and layout.
How would you describe your decorating style? The style I most identify with is known as Steampunk, which is a combination between Gothic and Victorian. Steampunk uses lots of industrial metals and repurposed woods to create a unique design feature.
Designers like to say there are no rules. Do you agree? Yes, I agree the sky's the limit. That is how the history of Interior Design changes is by thinking outside the box and breaking the rules once in a while.
What are the key things to consider when you’re planning the layout of a house? Renovating a home doesn’t always have to mean spending a lot. You can create new rooms on a budget when upcycling by reusing your existing decor or repurposing decor for a new design. Planning according to your needs is another key thing to consider. Start with the basics of what your home's specific needs are, then you can either expand or downsize these spaces in the future. The classic seven elements of Interior Design (space, line, forms, light, colour, texture, and pattern) will help narrow down what the client wants and will create a complimentary look in each room.
Never forget about storage space. Each room can benefit from adequate storage which will allow for a functional area. Do you have any inexpensive tricks for updating a room? Creating a vignette update without spending a dime will create an eye-catching room. Find like-colored accessories to create a pleasing vignette on your coffee or console table. Grouping similar accessories together makes them a collection and yields a bigger design impact.
Add color with art. Make a colorful splash with a gallery wall. Artwork can be expensive, but if you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, try creating your own gallery wall with wallpaper and with a simple frame. This will create an impressive display of color for any type of room.
Bringing houseplants into a room not only adds life to your decor, but they also deliver a lot of health benefits.
What areas of a house should one invest in? The kitchen is the heart of any home, with minor kitchen renovations it will present an inviting warm environment to the main part of the home. A minor remodel could include replacing cabinet doors, countertops, lighting, flooring and appliances.A master suite (that’s a bedroom, ensuite bathroom, walk-in closet and maybe a dressing room) will add value to your home. Basements no longer have to be creepy scenes. They now add more value to the home with more area added to the total square footage of the house. By doubling up as a game room, gym or a place to set up your personal bar. The options are endless. Adding these new renovations will mean more value to your home overall.
When budget is limited, what are the priorities to make a house feel like a home? Painting with cool tones is an inexpensive way to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Lighting fixtures are a quick and inexpensive way to make a design statement to a room. A popular fixture is industrial style lighting. Window treatments can create height and dimension within the room. Decorative pillows are a great way to add different textures and color to a room.
Are there any interiors trends you think people should avoid? White on white will create a cold sterile looking environment. Fake plants are great dust collectors and who’s cleaning them! Using decor from just one era can create a dual and drab environment.
