What triggered your interest in art? When was the first time you told yourself “I want to be an artist”? My great aunt always had the most amazing collection of abstract pieces. I can remember walking into her house as a child and being mesmerized by the buildup of paint and the boldness in size. I feel like art makes a space different – it adds personality. I’m not really sure I ever told myself I wanted to be an “artist”… I more so wanted to connect with people, and it seemed like painting was the best way to do that.
You work mainly creating abstract paintings. What is it about this style that first attracted you? It’s free. You can interpret it anyway you’d like. It makes you feel something, and most “good” work pushes you back onto yourself.
How does living in the South influence your art practice? You get to tell a story. The south is all about traditions and storytelling. You get to share a story with your client and invite them to be a part of it.
What is the one museum you’d like to visit? Tough question. The one gallery I’d like to visit right now is David Kordansky Gallery. This Los Angeles-based contemporary art gallery represents more than three dozen artists and estates.
What or who is your biggest influence on your art at this point in your career? People are always my biggest influence. Clothing is a close second.
How could the art industry become better in your opinion? I think the art industry should be more approachable by creating a platform for viewers to understand it.
What can art teach us about ourselves? We need to be more playful. Let yourself dream a bit more.
If you weren’t an artist, what would you do for a living? If I were to do nothing close to that industry, I’d love to open up a space for underprivileged kids in the community where they can be welcomed and be given opportunities, they might not have access to otherwise. A place where they could be seen, walked beside, and receive guidance.
